US gives 50

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the earthquake. Our embassy in Rome will provide 50,000 (dollars) in emergency relief funding," State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.

Italian authorities told the United States they did not need rescue teams, Wood said.

President Barack Obama earlier offered his condolences on a visit to Turkey and voiced hope that the United States could send rescuers.

The earthquake killed at least 100 people and injured 1,500 more as it reduced medieval buildings to rubble in the central town of L'Aquila.

Wood said there were no reports of US citizens among the dead or injured but that the US embassy in Rome was reaching out to Americans living in the region.

While this is terrible what happened in Italy, we are smacked down by EU no matter what we give each time to each country which is always a LOT more than most places give. And honestly, we don't have it anymore. So let charity begin at home this time. Of course if we don't give the most we will be blamed by the Euro-pusses and if we do it will never be enough so you know how it goes, damned if you do...

Gee, should this be taken as a sign that the piggy bank is empty or the State Department's contempt for the Italian people? The State Department gave $900 million to Palestinians and $50,000 to the Italians. It sounds like we have our priorities right in order.

Gee, I'll bet that is almost as much as the Obama administration spent on the "Reset" button (with the Russian word "Overcharge" instead of "Reset") that Hillary Clinton gave to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Well, the Italians shouldn't expect that much anyway. We need our international aid to fund abortions.

What an idiotic administration this is turning out to be... and in less that 3 months... And people say Bush's administration was bad.... at least they would give something that was worth it's weight in crap... :/ Oh well... I guess it's Bush's fault because Obama had to give what should go to Italy (at least for a measure in goodwill) to GM and AIG.... :/
