President Barack Obama dislikes Britain, but he's keen to meet the Queen

President Barack Obama dislikes Britain, but he's keen to meet the Queen

President Obama has been rudeness personified towards Britain this week. His handling of the visit of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to Washington was appalling. First Brown wasn't granted a press conference with flags, then one was hastily arranged in the Oval office after the Brits had to beg. Obama looked like he would rather have been anywhere else than welcoming the British leader to his office and topped it all with his choice of present (*) for the PM. A box of 25 DVDS including ET, the Wizard of Oz and Star Wars? Oh, give me strength. We do have television and DVD stores on this side of the Atlantic. Even Gordon Brown will have seen those films too often already.

The Queen
A bit of regal glamour is quick to woo Barack Obama (Photo: PA)

This was coupled with Michelle Obama's casual choice of gifts for the Brown sons - matching models of the helicopter which ferry her husband around. While Sarah Brown had spent time choosing gifts for the Obama girls, Michelle had clearly sent an aide to the White House gift shop at the last moment.

All in all, he doesn't think much of us, as I explained in my post here earlier this week.

But what's this? Something, suddenly, seems to have made the Obama White House perk up and start to take an interest in the Brits. The Queen has invited the President to tea when he's here for the G20 in April. And he's in through the front door of Buckingham Palace faster than a Harley Davidson roaring along Route 66.

Note how the coolness of Team Obama disappears when a bit of regal glamour is introduced into the equation. He might not like the Brits, but he can recognise a global superstar when he encounters one. He wants to be associated with her. He's shameless.

(*) If Obama, or someone in his inner circle, had spent two minutes thinking about what present to get Brown then they could easily have come up with something appropriate. He likes books. He loves American history. Get him a signed first edition of a good Robert Dallek book such as the brilliant Flawed Giant  on LBJ. Come to think of it, Obama should read it too, if he hasn't yet, as it reveals a great deal about how a Presidency can go so wrong.

DOG'S AIRS AND DISGRACES

They could have bought him that bicycle pump I mentioned last month. [ To really put the wind up the Labour Party.] The old ones are the best!

Brown was hardly polite when he met with George Bush, was he? Brown was hardly polite when he tried to blame Obama's country for his own failings, was he? He is an unelected leader of a country who would be very unlikely to elect his party to lead them now, so Obama is actually paying this country a huge compliment by meeting the deranged fraud at all.

Yes, but the two are quite different. President Obama's meeting the Queen is a meeting of two heads of state : meeting Gordon Brown is the attendance of her prime miniser on a head of state.

What happened to the "stiff upper lip"? All this whining about toys and presents?

I am so happy to see you guys across the pond coming around to viewing Obama as he is and not as the blank slate he was in which everyone painted whatever they wished he was. I was living in London during the election and I seem to recall most Brits thinking we Americans somehow reclaimed our soul when we elected this man. In fact, we sold our souls in order to feel good about ourselves.

Obama didn't see Brown as anything. His vision seems more ego-centric. Hopefully, he and his wife will somehow try to make amends for the fiasco handling of Brown. Also, hopefully, Michelle Obama will wear something with sleeves when she meets the Queen.

Amen Jim, from Virginia. A mostly true statement. Do you not think that the liberal media had a lot to do with his election?

Ooh dear, where does this leave what's-his-name's Lady Macbeth theory. Aah well there was never any evidence of this anyway !

The Obamas have always carried the water for drag queens, so perhaps doing it for the real queen isn't so odd.

The media in the US has been biased toward the left ever since Watergate (and even before that, it just got worse then). The political coverage in the media has been scandalous. When they get around to actually writing the history of this era, the media will look like the Democrat lapdogs they are.

For an interesting overview of gifts to the President you should check out the link below-The US Office of Protocol keeps track of all gifts given to the US President and other Federal Employees - linked below is the full gift list for 2006.

Are you kidding me???!!!??? The world's economy is going to pot and you're worried about flags and dvd's? Give me a break! I'm glad that the fanfare was minimal --- it shows Obama is putting his time and energy into the things that really matter. Think about it!

"Obama is putting his time and energy into the things that really matter."

Yeah, like passing trillion dollar spending bills no one has even bothered to read. Like using a banking crisis to foist British-style hospitals on us (sorry, no offense, but I've been in some of your hospitals).

There are signs of REAL hope in the air. Three Senate Democrats have come out and finally balked at this totally insane spending.

You really shouldn't be offended. Obama was rude not because of any animus toward Mr. Brown or England but because he is a rank amature.

His handlers have not yet trained him on diplomatic courtesy. He'll be more gracious once his handlers see the polls on his behaviour and push it more toward the top of their agenda.

As an American, I surely hope that the Queen will not meet Obama for any other purpose other than to to dress down the arrogant punk. Obama's dissing of Brown is inexcusable - regardless of what one thinks of Brown.

Why you Brits swoon over the nothingness that is Obama is beyond me. Then again, you've given knighthood to Ted Kennedy. Pleading insanity at this point might be your best defense.

Speaking of Queens, Michelle Obama resembles nothing as much as a hefty drag queen impersonating Jackie O.
My eyes are grateful that her handlers have, at least, stopped short of propping a pill box hat on top of her large and angry head.

As Jack Nicholson said in Batman, your country needs an enema. Americans (including our President) have more important things to do than coddle your PM when he comes begging like a common mendicant.

Oh c'mon now! How many of you tut-tutted but secretly sniggered when President Bush had a shoe thrown at him?
Obama and Mamma Obama obviously thought it would be great sport to lob a bit of footware at El Gordo. It's not like he's even elected or anything.

If the media hadn't blocked out all research of Obama during the campaign, and hadn't slobbered all over him, we wouldn't have him as President now. But no, all of you had to carry him on a pillow, as you said the most rude things about Gov. Palin! Not saying McCain would have been great, but he wouldn't be entertaining every Wednesday night, handing out $100 per steaks!
Obama is telling US citizens, "let them eat cake" while he jet sets around the world only to see the most influential and famous!

Unbelievable. The guy just does not get it. He is the steward and chief protector of our country and constitution not the king. I can not wait until 2012 to get rid of this clown
